Digital image with event information is shareable. \nPlease click here for the full Press Release \nAmerican Legion Post 2 is proud to host the cadets from South Doyle High School Army JROTC\, Cherokee Battalion\, as they honorably retire a record setting number of American flags. \nThe South Doyle High School JROTC cadets will attempt setting a self-proclaimed record with the largest number of American Flags to be retired at one time. \nThe Cherokee Battalion began this Service Learning Project after assisting with a similar flag retirement ceremony at American Legion Post 2 Knoxville\, in 2018 where 508 flags were retired.  The cadets initially began collecting flags and set a goal of retiring 1\,000 flags\, following their 2019 JROTC Program of Accreditation inspection. The community quickly stepped in and the cadets have received over 4\,000 flags. They are on track to surpass their goal! \nThe cadets have focused on flag history\, protocol\, customs\, and etiquette\, including the United States Flag Code\, Title 4\, Section 8k: \nThe flag\, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display\, should be destroyed in a dignified way\, preferably by burning. \nWe invite members of the public to bring their worn or damaged American flags to the post\, where they will be properly folded and honorably retired. The opening ceremony will begin Saturday morning\, and will continue through the night\, while the flags are still there. \n5700 Old Rutledge Pike. DESCRIPTION:Due to the Veterans Day parade being canceled this year. On Saturday the 7th of November\, we are planning on a Post 2 picnic on the post grounds. Members of Post 2 will be placing flags at John Sevier Cemetery beginning at 0830. The the American Legion Riders will rally at the post site at 1100am\, have our safety briefing and then kickstands up at 1130. The ride / convoy will proceed to John Sevier Veterans Cemetery and then return to the Post site for the picnic. Please send either the commander\, at commander@legion.com or the Adjutant\, Norita Cruz\, at norita.irene@gmail.com\, a message to let them know if you will be attending and how many will be with you. DESCRIPTION:Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic\, we are unable to meet at the American Red Cross. With that being said\, the DAV Chapter 24 has graciously offered there Chapter House for our use. Our next meeting will be on the 2nd of November\, beginning at 6:00pm. This will be our Holiday meal. DESCRIPTION:The 10th Annual East TN Veterans Memorial Association’s Medal of Honor evening at Foundry at World’s Fair Park. The guest speaker is Dr. Mitchell Yockelson\, who is considered one of the foremost authorities on World War I and has served as an on-screen consultant to the History Channel\, PBS and Pentagon Channel.Currently. Yockelson is an investigative archivist in the office of the Inspector General at the Nation Archives and Records Administration where he investigates the theft of historical documents.Additionally\, he is the chief historian for the United States World War One Centennial Commission. \nTickets to the 2020 MOHE are $75 per person or $600 for a table of eight; however a limited number of tables will be available for only $500 during the month of February to eligible local nonprofit Veteran organizations.
